This fascinating footage from the 1939-1940 New York World's Fair features
Sparko who holds the historical distinction of being the first
electro-mechanical Robotic dog. While Sony’s AIBO is often credited with
introducing the consumer to Robotic canine companions Sparko arrived nearly
sixty years earlier. He was designed explicitly as the companion for Elektro
the famous humanoid Robot who often appeared separately. Westinghouse marketed
Sparko as his faithful friend showcasing his sophisticated, (for the time),
ability to bark, sit, and even beg at command. He was an "electromechanical"
Robot using motors and gears for movement, and internal electrical relays for
logic.
This distinction is vital separating him from purely mechanical
"wind-up" automaton Robots, and makes Sparko a direct light-chasing ancestor
of the modern adaptive systems in use today.
We hope you enjoy this unique look at the foundational history of automation.
While the "brains" of today’s Robots now involve complex digital intelligence,
and perception the core dream of a dynamic companion-driven Robotic canine
partner is nearly a century old.
Looking Ahead
The tasks of helping to make Robots adapt to their surroundings is what we at
True Partner Systems are focused on today. If you are interested in exploring
how modern Robotic manipulation, and companion technologies can modernize your
operations you are welcome to connect with us for a Consultation! Our
"Generalist" perspective ensures we understand both the legacy, and the
leading edge of this technology. Check out the video with the link:
