ELIZA (created 1964–1966) simulates a Rogerian psychotherapist by using
pattern matching and keyword substitution to mimic conversation without true
understanding. It analyzes user input for specific keywords, rearranges those
words, and reflects them back as questions, falling back on generic,
open-ended phrases if no pattern is found. Key mechanisms behind ELIZA
include:
Keyword Detection: The program scans user input for predefined,
high-priority words (e.g., "mother," "always," "alike").
Pattern Matching & Reassembly: Once a keyword is found, ELIZA uses
pre-programmed rules to break down the sentence and rearrange it into a new,
seemingly thoughtful response.
Scripting: The most famous script, DOCTOR, allowed ELIZA to act like a
therapist, allowing it to turn statements like "I am sad" into questions
like "Do you think coming here will help you not to be sad?".
The "ELIZA Effect": Users frequently projected human-level understanding
onto the bot, a phenomenon known as the ELIZA effect.
If a keyword was not recognized, the program would use a fallback, such as
"Can you elaborate on that?" or "I see".

type of functional equivalency—just in its simplest form. She tries to help
the user by listening, and mirroring back their own thoughts on their issues
