The meme below is not entirely wrong! In the evolution of AI assistants, Microsoft's Clippy (the Office Assistant) is the undisputed Symbolic AI historical ancestor of Microsoft Copilot. Clippy used simpler, rule-based algorithms, and was technically Symbolic AI. Copilot is an Advanced Generative AI Assistant, and uses more sophisticated agentic capabilities. Both were designed to integrate directly into productivity software to anticipate, and aid the user's workflow. This lineage demonstrates that the core idea of an integrated software partner is not new. It has simply evolved from a simple helper to a highly sophisticated advanced generative system capable of being a much better assistant. The only factual difference is the technology not the ambition.
